About the Team:
The Technology business unit is responsible for the effective delivery, management and services of all technology disciplines within the air navigation services environment – engineering design, software design and development, technology architecture and infrastructure, asset management, installation and maintenance, technical training, workload planning, maintenance program development, project management, and logistics support.

The purpose of Portfolio Delivery is to provide workforce and capital programme planning, to successfully project manage the delivery of the capital programme, and to optimise the performance of the Technology Group.

About the Projects:
With over a hundred projects on the go at any given point of time, our projects span across engineering/infrastructure, electrical/power, networks, enterprise systems and property.

Our uniquely complex environment includes 20+ inhouse systems, hardware (design, build, installation and maintenance) at 90 NavAid sites, networks (design, implementation and maintenance), IT services (design, maintenance and improvement), construction and maintenance of buildings.

About the Role:
We are hiring numerous permanent full-time Project Managers (intermediate and senior) as part of our Project Delivery team with the roles based at our Auckland (airport) or Christchurch (Burnside) offices. The range of the Project Managers’ roles varies to cover the breadth of our operations including engineering/infrastructure, electrical/power, networks, enterprise systems and property.

Reporting to a Project Delivery Manager, you’ll ensure the professional delivery of Airways’ projects and programmes, and the achievement of each programme’s outcomes, ensuring each project is delivered within defined scope, time and budget constraints.

As a Project Manager, your key responsibilities include:

  • Managing projects from project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, to closure processes.
  • Effective management of scope, time, cost, quality issues, risks, people, communication, procurement, project reporting and the operational handover of the project.
  • The impact of the project(s) on diverse stakeholder groups including airlines, airport companies, regulatory authorities, military, general aviation, general public, and staff.
  • Multiple professional disciplines and consultants both internal and external to Airways.

About You:
For success you will be known for your effective communication, problem solving and influencing skills. Through your proactive and professional approach, you’ll be able to build and maintain lasting relationships whilst ensuring delivery.

Additionally, you will hold:

  • Undergraduate university degree in Engineering, Science, Commerce or equivalent
  • 10+ years’ industry experience in a complex environment like Airways (SOE, 800+ employees, numerous locations and heavily regulated)
  • 5 years as an engineering/infrastructure, electrical/power, network, enterprise systems or construction/building project manager
  • Experience managing commercial contractors, vendors and suppliers
  • Strong financial acumen and budget management
  • Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, implementing quality assurance and quality control systems
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with the application of project management methodologies (PMBOK preferred)
  • Good knowledge of appropriate safety legislation
  • Competence in the MS Office Suite including SharePoint, Teams and MS Project
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team and business environment, collaborate with people, show resilience and agility, take ownership and focus on delivering successful outcomes.

Beneficial:

  • Postgraduate university degree or equivalent
  • PMP accreditation or similar professional project management qualification.
  • Prior exposure to Sentient PPM software.

In addition, you will have experience in the following areas:

Engineering/Infrastructure:

  • Sound understanding of engineering principles
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and challenge engineering designs, drawings, and specifications
  • Understanding of engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Appreciation of asset lifecycle, maintainability, and whole-of-life costs
  • Demonstrated experience delivering engineering projects of similar scale and complexity.

Electrical/Power:

  • Sound understanding of electrical engineering principles
  • Strong understanding of power systems including:
  • High‑voltage (HV) and low‑voltage (LV) networks
  • Substations, transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems
  • Transmission and distribution networks
  • Ability to read, interpret, and challenge single line diagrams (SLDs), protection schemes and cable schedules and layouts
  • Understanding of commissioning, testing, and energisation processes
  • Understanding of engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Appreciation of asset lifecycle, maintainability, and whole-of-life costs
  • Demonstrated experience delivering electrical engineering projects of similar scale and complexity.

Networks:

  • Sound understanding of networking fundamentals:
  • LAN/WAN, MPLS, SD‑WAN, VPNs
  • Routing and switching (e.g. TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF)
  • Firewalls, load balancers, and network security concepts
  • Familiarity with data centre, cloud, and hybrid network environments
  • Ability to interpret and challenge network diagrams, architectures, technical designs and implementation plans
  • Understanding of network performance, resilience, redundancy, and capacity planning
  • Knowledge of deployment, migration, cutover, and rollback strategies.
  • Appreciation of asset lifecycle, maintainability, and whole-of-life costs
  • Demonstrated experience delivering network related projects of similar scale and complexity.

Enterprise systems:

  • Sound knowledge of enterprise systems, platforms and integration principles in a heavily regulated environment
  • Ability to understand and challenge:
    • Solution architecture and functional designs
    • System configuration choices
    • Integration and data flow impacts
  • Experience planning and coordinating:
    • Data cleansing and migration
    • System integrations and interfaces
    • Cutover and go‑live sequencing
  • Ability to manage risks related to data quality, reconciliation, and legacy decommissioning
  • Familiarity with end‑to‑end business processes across numerous business units and/or entities
  • Awareness of platform constraints, release cycles, and vendor roadmaps
  • Knowledge of security, privacy, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Property:

  • Sound understanding construction methodologies, sequencing, and site operations
  • Ability to read, interpret, and challenge construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
  • Knowledge of building materials, temporary works, and constructability principles
  • Understanding of asset lifecycle, durability, and whole‑of‑life cost considerations
  • Demonstrated experience delivering construction/building projects of similar scale and complexity.
