Technical Coordinator

We manage 30 million square kilometres of airspace — one of the largest flight information regions on earth. As New Zealand's air navigation service provider, we're trusted with the safety of every commercial flight in New Zealand and across our vast oceanic region. Every aircraft crossing that space depends on technology that never sleeps. As a Technical Coordinator, you'll be the person who helps keep it that way.

  • Complex, safety-critical technical work with national impact
  • Structured paid training in a unique operational environment
  • Five weeks' leave, shift penal rates, and an inclusive team culture

About the Role:
We’re hiring two Technical Coordinators to join our Christchurch based campus.

You'll work inside our 24/7 operations centre, monitoring and maintaining the communications, navigation, and surveillance systems that underpin New Zealand's air navigation services. This is real-time, high-stakes technical work. When something needs attention, you provide the first-line response - assessing the issue, diagnosing and resolving what you can, coordinating immediate actions, and escalating where specialist support or field intervention is needed.

Day to day, you will:

  • Monitor and coordinate New Zealand's critical air navigation systems around the clock
  • Lead the response to incidents, faults, and service disruptions across the network
  • Balance operational risk and competing priorities to keep air traffic moving safely
  • Coordinate technicians, engineers, and service providers to restore and maintain services
  • Act as the operational bridge between Air Traffic Control, Technology teams, and external partners
  • Provide clear advice and impact assessments during incidents and planned work
  • Drive sharp communication and decision-making when it matters most.

About You (What You’ll Bring):
We're looking for technically capable people with strong analytical instincts and the discipline to stay calm under pressure. Your background could be in electronics, telecommunications, IT networking, radio frequency (RF) systems, avionics, or a closely related field — what matters more is your ability to think clearly and act decisively when systems are under pressure.

You'll need:

  • 3+ years' hands-on experience in avionics, IT, telecommunications, networking, RF or a related technical discipline
  • A relevant trade qualification, degree, or equivalent technical experience (e.g. B.Eng. Tech or similar)
  • A track record of managing multiple systems and priorities under operational pressure
  • Sharp analytical and fault-finding skills, and genuine curiosity about why things break
  • Clear, confident communication across technical and non-technical audiences
  • A genuine appetite for learning — this role will stretch you well beyond your first year.

It would be beneficial if you have:

  • Exposure to aviation or avionics systems
  • Experience in a safety-critical or regulated operational environment (e.g. defence, utilities, transport, emergency services)
  • Familiarity with incident or operations management frameworks (e.g. ITIL)
  • Familiarity with condition monitoring tools or SCADA/network management systems.

About our Offering (What You’ll Get):
We invest heavily in our people as the complexity of what we operate, demands expertise that takes years to develop. Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • A fully paid 12 to 18-month development programme covering our systems, aviation regulation, and the operational environment — you'll be ready before you're expected to perform independently
  • A competitive base salary, plus penal rates for shift and weekend work
  • Five weeks' annual leave, enhanced parental leave, and a clear pathway to grow your career
  • A robust health & wellbeing programme, retailer discounts, and a genuinely supportive team culture.

To Apply:
We'd love to hear from people who are technically sharp, operationally minded, and ready to build a career in a field where the stakes are real. If you're not sure whether your background is the right fit, apply anyway and tell us why you think it is — we read every application.

Please note that you must be legally eligible to work in New Zealand to be considered.
